I do have that checked as it is.

Further to my question, it seems that when I had mail open I caught some of the keys on the keyboard when I moved my hand above the key board and this caused mail to go to full screen, I really need to know how to get the app back to what it was. (If all that makes sense.

If you are in Full screen— the green pill button in the upper left of the application window will exit.

ESC key will also exit Full Screen

or

from the drop down menu Mail>View>Exit Full screen

or

the key short cut fn F

In my setup, this only happens when the Mail application itself is fullscreen. You may want to try the option highlighted below (Mail Preferences>General).
