Gmail Badge notifications

Hello All,

I think I figured out the magic path to correct the issue.

I currently have iOS 15.4

I currently have gmail version 6.0.220306 (came out 3 days ago)

I went in to the iphone and my ipad setting, turned off notifications, then turned back on notification.

I went into the gmail app in my iphone and ipad and updated the gmail app. then I went into each and went to settings > the account > notifications > switch to None then back to All new mail > backed out then to Notification Sound updated to Welcome for both devices > backed out and closed the app.

Ive sent 4 test emails to myself from a different email and I received the badge notification instantly on both devices!

from what I was reading on other sites the Gmail tone Classic (which my ipad defaulted to) is no longer working, so I think doing a quick reset of my notifications to off then back on and selecting a tone of anything but Classic (which only shows on my ipad and not on my iphone as an option), and it worked like a gem!

I just went into my settings and turned on Background App Refresh and turned Gmail on and everything else off (because it is a battery killer to have everything on)…and that worked to get my Gmail badge back! But, I 100% never had this on in the past because said battery killer. It’s a workaround for me until they fix it.

Background App Refresh for the Gmail app was turned OFF. Badges need to be turned on for Gmail app notifications as well (mine already was)

i turned it on and Badges started working

Make sure “Background App Refresh” is toggled on for Gmail. This worked for me.

Settings>General>Background app refresh

There’s a new app update version 6.0.220403. It took away the problem for me. I’m getting all notifications and “correct” badge count.

I've also been having this problem and it was fixed by turning off time sensitive notifications. Not sure why but it was suggested by this article and worked for me:

Turn off “Time Sensitive Notifications “ in the Notification settings of the Gmail app. It worked for me!

Same problem. I’ve found that If completely close out the Gmail app, the badge is dead. If I let the Gmail app run in the background and not close it out the badge works for me.

hi! I fixed this problem by turning off Time Sensitive Notifications for Gmail.

Yeah, I’ve done extensive troubleshooting as well (I’m in technical support) and having the app opened is a temporary workaround. The app developer will need to address the issue with a software update for their app. I’m talkin’ to you, Google!

Coming back to my comment from yesterday. Today the badge started to reappear, but in a very random way. Sometimes it works, then again it's no longer working. There doesn't seem to be any pattern. It's definitely an issue with the Gmail app, not with the iOS. I strongly advise you to use the feedback button from the app and give feedback to the developer. The more the merrier :)

Something I have noticed that may help Apple/Google solve the issue and may also help out people with a temp "fix" is that if I leave my computer browser open on Gmail, the badges will update on my phone. Somehow by my account displaying a new e-mail in my browser, it tells the iPhone app to display the badge. So if I'm heading out, I'll just leave Gmail open in a browser window on my computer at home and the badges work fine. For those with security issues with this method, I have not tested if locking the computer (via Ctrl-Alt-Del) keeps it working.

I downloaded the Google Calendar on my iPhone and since then my Gmail app badges have been appearing again. No rhyme or reason, just sharing that is what happened.
