Gmail Badge notifications

For the past several days my iphone stopped showing the badge when I get new email on the gmail app.

I’ve checked the settings, turned them off then turned them back on, deleted the app and put it back on the phone, and restarted the phone. Nothing works.

Please tell me how to fix this.

Hello All,

I think I figured out the magic path to correct the issue.

I currently have iOS 15.4

I currently have gmail version 6.0.220306 (came out 3 days ago)

I went in to the iphone and my ipad setting, turned off notifications, then turned back on notification.

I went into the gmail app in my iphone and ipad and updated the gmail app. then I went into each and went to settings > the account > notifications > switch to None then back to All new mail > backed out then to Notification Sound updated to Welcome for both devices > backed out and closed the app.

Ive sent 4 test emails to myself from a different email and I received the badge notification instantly on both devices!

from what I was reading on other sites the Gmail tone Classic (which my ipad defaulted to) is no longer working, so I think doing a quick reset of my notifications to off then back on and selecting a tone of anything but Classic (which only shows on my ipad and not on my iphone as an option), and it worked like a gem!

No. I’ve deinstalled and reinstalled the app and everything Tania Gougler and Apple said to do; even going so far as to reset my phone to factory and installed JUST the Google Mail app and it still doesn’t display badges.

I do have an iPhone 6S that I never updated to iOS 15 and Google Mail still works on that iPhone so that’s why I’m convinced it’s something to do with one of Apple’s updates. So much for keeping your iPhone up to date.

I'm still trying to get over the 2nd brilliant tech suggestion that Tania got about turning notifications on for EVERYTHING. I can’t believe how utterly ridiculous that suggestion is.

This happened back either at the end of February or beginning of March when I updated to 1 of their 15.0000165, or some absurd update # we were asked to perform.

After updating to iOS 15, there have been a voluminous amount of updates they’ve pushed out. Clearly that says that 15 wasn’t FULLY ready and tested before release. But you know Apple, when they give a release date, for a new iOS, ready or not, it’s released because they’ve got to push those shiny new iPhones for $1,500.00. So if it will at least sort of work, they’ll push out trash and then send out a million updates to fix things. They’re absolutely not the same “we want to get things right for the consumer” company they used to be when the first iPhone was released.

im still using my trusty iPhone 7 Plus that was given to me as a gift. I have an iPhone X as a “just in case this 1 fails” that I will start using in 2 years when I can not update this phone to iOS 17. When X outlives it’s operating system, I’ll happily switch to a nice cheap Android phone.

I did a full factory reset and when it had finished I downloaded and installed only the Gmail app from the App Store. Other than the regular programs that load automatically when you do a full reset, this was the only 1 on there that was outside the basic app installs you get when you first activate your phone. It still happened.

Then I restored from backup, and the same issue continued.

They had to have broken something in 1 of their 9 updates since Apple first released iOS 15 on 09/20/2021.

The “Background App Refresh” has absolutely nothing to do with the badge notifications. I keep that off like for ever for absolutely all apps and they still push the badge on the screen. So did Gmail until recently. Also, please keep a close eye on the app, sometimes the badge works, sometimes not. If you receive very few emails per day, you might live under the impression that it works. But I'm getting around 5-6 emails every hour for work and can clearly see it's not working properly.

Add me to the list. Like everyone, I’ve tried everything I could think of. When the updated version released yesterday, I was hopeful it would have been fixed. But, no. The dev replies in App Store are very frustrating to read. Not helpful in the slightest.

I’m hoping everyone here has reported through the app under “Send Feedback”. My feeling is that unless they get bombarded through that method, a fix might still be far away.
