Secret Messages on Messenger

I have an updated iPhone 11pro. Today I was unable to send secret messages --I get the red exclamation mark, BUT I am able to receive messages. It is not just one person. This occured mid conversation. I have updated phone, I have deleted and reset Messenger and FB, and I have reset my passwords. Regular Messenger is working fine. Please help!
