Battery drain during night after upgrading to macOS 12.2

I updated my work MacBook Pro (2019 with TB) from 12.1 to 12.2 on the release day. After that, every morning the battery is fully drained. The battery is fully charged to 100% > I close the lid > next morning > battery is 1%.

I googled it and it seems that it has something to do with macOS 12.2.

Anyone else with this issue?

Since it's a corporate laptop you probably can't uninstall the unnecessary software McAfee and FireEye. But ask them and give them the following info. Who knows, they might be reasonable and knowledgeable about Macs.

Why? First, there is no reason to ever install or run any 3rd party "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus, VPN or security apps on your Mac.  This user tip describes what you need to know and do in order to protect your Mac: Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community.

There are no known viruses, i.e. self propagating, for Macs.  There are, however, adware and malware which require the user to install although unwittingly most of the time thru sneaky links, etc.

Anti Virus developers try to group all types as viruses into their ad campaigns of fear.  They do a poor job of the detecting and isolating the adware and malware.  Since there are no viruses these apps use up a lot of system resources searching for what is non-existent and adversely affect system and app performance.

There is one app, Malwarebytes, which was developed by a long time contributor to these forums and a highly respected member of the computer security community, that is desshoigned solely to seek out adware and known malware and remove it.  The free version is more than adequate for most users and will take care of the adware installed.

If your IT team will let you uninstall those apps do so. In the meantime just shut the laptop down at night. Having an SSD drive it will reboot in the morning in very little time, like 20 or so seconds, so should not be an inconvenience.

Major Issues:

Anything that appears on this list needs immediate attention.

Unsigned files - There are unsigned software files installed that could be adware and should be reviewed.

Minor Issues:

These issues do not need immediate attention but they may indicate future problems or opportunities for improvement.

More than one antivirus app - This computer has multiple antivirus apps installed.

The correct number of antivirus apps is zero.

The OS is mounted in a read only volume, and it includes a frequently updated security system built-in.

I did mean the whole report - as you can see for yourself, it does not contain any private information.

If you don't want to post it, that is your prerrogative, of course.

From what I can see, I'd suspect mcafee - which you should not have, in any case. But there is not much information to go on.

If you decide to post the report, use the additional text button below your message, and paste it there. The report is too long to post directly in the message.

You also have several configuration profiles.

These could be legitimate, in case this is a corporate mac - in which case, you are probably at the mercy of a less than sympathetic IT department. If this is a home mac, this suggests malware was installed...

Unsigned Files:

Launchd: /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.iboss.networkchange.plist

Executable: /Applications/Utilities/iboss.app/gen4agent/scripts/monitor.sh

Details: Executable file is hidden - possibly adware

Launchd: /Library/LaunchAgents/com.iboss.loginSignal.plist

Executable: /Applications/Utilities/iboss.app/gen4agent/scripts/iboss-user-signal.sh

Details: Executable file is hidden - possibly adware

Launchd: /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.iboss.gen4agent.plist

Executable: /Applications/Utilities/iboss.app/gen4agent/gen4agent-macos -d

Details: Executable file is hidden - possibly adware

Unless you know these are legitimate, they certainly do look like adware to me.

Update:

I just wanted to report back on my case regarding the battery drain issue after upgrading to macOS 12.2. After some tests, it seems that the issue is with the Bluetooth. I tested to remove my Apple MagicMouse and Apple MagicKeyboard from the connected devices and the battery drain issue didn't happen.

Then I connected the devices, set the MacBook to sleep mode (closed the lid) and the battery started to drain again.

Any one else with this issue?

It seems, that it is the right track to the reason. I´ve testet some settings (MacBook Pro 2019) and realized that even during a full switched off machine the battery drain was about 40% over night. SMC and NVRAM-reset didn´t solve the Problem. After checking some syslog entries, there was a reasonable suspiction targeting to the Bluetooth-Stack. Disabled Bluetooth results in 0% battery drain after two hours (BTW: removing inactive BT-Devices did not take effect) - I´ll continue testing in this state overnight.

Not a solution now, but may be a hint for other users.

Today p.m. I decided to contact apple-support (Germany) to get hints or a solution statement. The 49-minutes call with a very helpful and friendly staff member was without any result; the meanwhile published problem was absolutely unknown there (... no info searching the supporters knowledge base too). To boost further investigations, I sent her the relevant part of the logfile out of " pmset -g log|grep -e 'sleep' -e 'wake' " - she promised to check it, ask her supervisor an call me back the day after tomorrow. In the meantime I'm testing the effect with WiFi-OFF and BT-ON/OFF.

It seems, that apple in fact was/is not informed about this problem - maybe useful to wait a couple of days to hear about solutions.

It seems, that apple gives attention to this problem; Rich from apple support (US) get in touch with me to get more information. I point him to my support ticket at apple DE, where problem-history and logfiles were uploaded by me. I'll stay in contact with him to provide help for possible solutions.

Update regarding to Bluetooth:

While MacBook in sleep mode and Bluetooth ON, with no active connections (i.e. magic mouse switched off and iPhone with "handoff" on, visible at BT-setup) the battery state is 100% after 10 hours. Some tests results in main problems with the active connected mouse > about 10% battery wastage for only one hour in sleep mode with closed lid.

Feb 6, 2022 8:40 AM in response to CreativeSmith

At Friday last week, Rich from Apple-Support testet Bluetooth errors with me and received a detailed log about. I'm confident, this will help to find a solution.

In addition I told him about my operating experience using different Bluetooth devices and versions.

I.e. my magic mouse 2 (BT-Version 3.0+EDR) causes battery drain in sleep mode for about 16% per hour !!! - using my old magic mouse 1 (old BT-Version, maybe V 2.0) and a Satechi BT-Keyboard, it causes NO battery wastage in a time-period of 10 hours (tree times over night tested at now). All tests with connected iPhone and watch, BT at MacBook was ON.

It seems, the Bluetooth Version in conjunction with macOS 12.2 is the reason for the problem (... anyone who ownes a magic keyboard should also test it with this device).
