I think it's reasonable to believe it is not my individual hardware, but something to do with the 12.2 bug that affects so many other users, not just me. This problem started all of a sudden, immediately after installing 12.2. If it were the hardware, I would have seen slow performance degradation over time. Coincidental, catastrophic hardware failure at the exact same time as an operating system upgrade that broke power performance for a lot of users seems unlikely, unless the operating system upgrade also did something that ruined the hardware.
