macbook pro did not sleep with lid closed & power off but ran out of battery since Monterey 12.2

The same thing happened when I manually selected "Sleep" from the Apple menu.

Since the upgrade, something has prevented the system from actually sleeping.

I guess by the book I'm supposed to reinstall MacOS now. That's a major PITA. Do they not test these things on all recent models before releasing an upgrade?

The same thing happened when I rebooted from safe mode into normal mode. This upgrade broke the lid action that puts the Macbook Pro to sleep.

Yes, the same thing happened in safe mode. In the morning I booted to safe mode when charged at 55%. I removed the power. I closed the lid and left it there. By 4 p.m. the Macbook had powered down (or crashed) with 0% battery. Did you mean for me to reboot to safe mode, and then reboot into normal mode, and then try it? I will try that too, but my guess is the same thing will happen. There's no reason the lid sleep action shouldn't work in safe mode as far as I know.

I think it's reasonable to believe it is not my individual hardware, but something to do with the 12.2 bug that affects so many other users, not just me. This problem started all of a sudden, immediately after installing 12.2. If it were the hardware, I would have seen slow performance degradation over time. Coincidental, catastrophic hardware failure at the exact same time as an operating system upgrade that broke power performance for a lot of users seems unlikely, unless the operating system upgrade also did something that ruined the hardware.

This seemed to work for a few days but now that fix is broken too. Bluetooth was off, but battery was drained this morning after two days without power attached and with the lid closed.

Turning off Bluetooth sometimes works. Sometimes it doesn't? Try that and let us know if that helps.
