Airpods stay mute on Macbook Pro 2021 (Monterey)

Hi y'all,


I have the Airpods 2020 and Macbook Pro 2021 (Monterey).


Lately, I have had the issue that my Airpods and Macbook Pro connect, but the earphones still stay mute. No sound coming out whatsoever. They still work brilliantly with my Iphone 8 and Ipad 2020 though.


I checked Mac's settings, the mute and sound icons, Youtube, Spotify, etc. - Nothing works. Without AirPods, however, the Mac plays sound as usual.


I have had this issue for ca. 2 weeks now. Any suggestions on how to fix that?

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today. As we understand, you can't hear sound when your AirPods are connected to your MacBook Pro.


You have tried some great troubleshooting by checking the Mac settings. Have you reset your AirPods: How to reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro?


We can also isolate this a bit further to see if the issue is only with your user or system-wide. Do they work in a new user account? Here's how to make one: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac.

Hi Michael,


thanks for your help! I tried both of your options, to 1) reconnect them with my account, and 2) try it via a new account. Here's what happened


1) It worked the first time! I could listen to music while working. However, when I closed my Mac them and opened it later again, the same problem occurred. It did not work a second time.


2) I tried a new account and there was 0 difference to my main.


However, I noticed one thing.


If I turn up the volume to the absolute maximum, I can hear some sound, really really low. So it seems like the sound is there, but even with the volume turned up to the maximum it is still so low that I cannot make out a single beat or word.


Could it be that something is wrong with the MacBook? Because the AirPods work perfectly with the iPhone and iPad, it’s strange.
