try updating your macOS the current stable release is Big Sur 11.6.3 (20G415) (January 26, 2022)

Thanks. I tried but I am not offered any system update at the App Store (just a garage band update which I never use and so have not downloaded.) So I am stuck with OS 11.5.2.

Any more ideas? Clue: if I move the pointer to the top right corner of the screen (where part of the date-time has fallen out of sight) and push the pointer BEYONG the edge of the screen, the screen image slides to the lft to revel the previously-missing part. But it doesn't remain visible for long.
