help getting an imac g5 to work as a second monitor

so i recently got a imac g5 with a webcam and i wanted to use it as a second monitor but it wont boot. do i need the imac to boot to use it a second monitor? and i dont have a keyboard with the command key

The computer must work normally. However, in your case bootability is a moot point.


Only a limited sub-set of iMacs could act as an external monitor fo another Mac, and no G5 models are among them. The exact hardware and software requirements are spelled out in this Apple support article:


Use your iMac as a display with target display mode - Apple Support


If someone sold you the G5 on the premise and promise that it works as an external monitor, you need to have a discussion with them about a refund.
