Very helpful. Thanks again.
I just got off the phone w/ a great rep from Apple. All set. Just had to tweak some settings on both the ATV and the iPhone.
The HomePods now play surround sound for anything mixed in surround through the ATV4K. And it sounds really good! I'd been playing through my stereo, and the voice was often buried in the mix. Through the HomePods with a show that's in surround sound, dialogue is much clearer.
And the HomePods now play stereo - not Dolby Atmos, which I don't want for music - through Siri from my Apple Music subscription without it turning on the ATV and the TV. So, all set.
For now, TV shows through Verizon Fios will be played through the stereo (I had a surround sound amp and speakers, but ditched it for a much better stereo amp and upgraded the speakers because I wanted better music - vinyl, streaming, etc. That's when I plugged everything into the stereo). But, when I get a new TV w/ eARC, I'll route it through the Apple TV and out the HomePods, and just use the stereo for music.
I may get a pair of HomePod mini's to put behind or beside us, just to add to the effect and to broaden the sound when playing music through Siri. I didn't know they're not capable of surround sound. Maybe in the future?
In the meantime, all good here. Thank you to both of you for helping me along.
