Beginning with macOS 10.15+, the root of the drive is off limits for personal use. You are no longer permitted to change anything on the root of the drive even if you are an admin user. Both Big Sur and Monterey have tightened these restrictions even further. The root of the drive is reserved to be a read-only system volume for the macOS system files. You should only store files with your own home user folder or within the "/Users/Shared" folder if you want to share files between other user accounts on the same Mac. See this Apple article for details:

Hi, bomaudio, i can sure help you on this one. Believe it or not this is the default for Catalina and later.. the cure is easy. Click on the drive once so it’s highlighted, and option-click/left-click on the drive and you should see a long window. Look just past the middle of the window.. there you’ll see permissions. You may have to click on the padlock at the bottom to make any changes. At the middle you’ll see the user(s) on the left and the permissions on the right. You should be able to change it from”read-only” to “read and write”…

you could try this: see link… this used to be handled with/in Disk Utility but not anymore… now you have to go into the Terminal to do this… your mileage may vary… anyways here’s the link : https://www.technipages.com/macos-sierra-repair-permissions… supposed to work in High Sierra as well…

John b,
I have a somewhat similar, but tougher, permissions problem. I have a late 2015 iMac running 10.136, which was setup with the option to use Bootcamp running Windows.
Windows side runs fine. But on the Mac side, even tho I am the admin, I can't change permissions to read and write. See image on left side. That is why I can't even update the OS.
Any sage advice most welcome!
Thanks
Avi
Thanks! Am waiting until I am sure I don't need my machine for a while to try!
