Google Chrome Crashes on Monterey

Every time I try and sign into a Google Account on Chrome the browser crashes. I have multiple users set up on chrome for personal and business use and need to sign to use the different accounts. After upgrading to macOS Monterey version 12.2.1 this issue has started to appear. I have re-installed Chrome, turned off hardware acceleration, cleared the cache etc, but nothing seems to resolve the issue. This is just one of the many bugs that have appeared after upgrading to Monterey!

First, there is no reason to ever install or run any 3rd party "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus, VPN or security apps on your Mac.  This user tip describes what you need to know and do in order to protect your Mac: Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community.

There are no known viruses, i.e. self propagating, for Macs.  There are, however, adware and malware which require the user to install although unwittingly most of the time thru sneaky links, etc.

Anti Virus developers try to group all types as viruses into their ad campaigns of fear.  They do a poor job of the detecting and isolating the adware and malware.  Since there are no viruses these apps use up a lot of system resources searching for what is non-existent and adversely affect system and app performance.

There is one app, Malwarebytes, which was developed by a long time contributor to these forums and a highly respected member of the computer security community, that is desshoigned solely to seek out adware and known malware and remove it.  The free version is more than adequate for most users.

Also, unless you're using a true VPN tunnel, such as between you and your employer, school or bank's servers, they are useless from a privacy standpoint.  Read these two articles: Public VPN's are anything but private and Former Malware Distributor Kape Technologies Now Owns ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, Private Internet Access, Zenmate, and a Collection of VPN “Review” Websites

Uninstall CleanMyMac according to the developer's instructions. And, unless you need one for school, banking or your employer, I'd uninstall your VPN app similarly.

Q - Limited drive access - More information may be available with Full Drive Access.

A - Run the application with Full Disc Access ( Security & Privacy - Full Disc Access ).

Q - Battery failure - Your battery is reporting that it needs to be serviced

Battery: Health = Service Battery - Cycle count = 1200.

A - Batteries are considered Consumable Products. Over time it will degrade to a point where it needs to be replaced. The usage is normal as the capacity will go up and down all the time and never stay always at 100%. Apple Batteries are rated for 1000 Full Battery Cycles and / or 80% Capacity before needing Evaluation or replacement.

Q - Antivirus software: CleanMyMac

A - Any Third Party Applications that will interfere with the normal operation of the OS, alter, modify, remove or delete or attempt to do so is an invitation for disaster and may require a Reinstallation of the OS. This will include CleanMyMac

Q - Automatic updates disabled - Automatic updates are disabled. This computer is at risk of malware infection.

Q - Apple security disabled - Apple security software is disabled. This computer is at risk of malware infection.

Please run Etrecheck and post its full report here.

Use the “additional text” button and paste the report into the text box.

Most of issues with Monterey end up being caused by okd stuff left from years past, especially if people upgrade year over year. Often there are system extensions from, say, El Capitan times.

That report may well show us what is probably causing the problems.

Anecdotally, I had several reports from users at work that Edge and Chrome were both randomly crashing all of a sudden. Mix of Big Sur and Catalina and all auto-update Edge & Chrome. Edge is based on Chromium the open source part of Google Chrome. I really think it's a Chromium bug. I had some users clear browser data and disable all their extensions and I didn't hear back yet. I switched one user to FireFox and that seemed to solve it for them. But they only used Chrome to login to another companies 365 account and used Chrome as an alternate to Safari to keep both systems apart as there are authentication problems switching 365 accounts or cloud identity logins on the same browser. It was only some of the users most were fine with no reports of crashing.

I noted that some lock files are created and left around probably after a not nominal exit of the application.

The files are located under /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/<Application Name>

and are named SingletonLock, SingletonCookie and SingletonSocket.

In the case of Google Chrome, and assuming your username is user open a terminal and execute the following commands

sudo rm -rf "/Users/user/Library/Application Support/Google Chrome/SingletonLock"

sudo rm -rf "/Users/user/Library/Application Support/Google Chrome/SingletonCookie"

sudo rm -rf "/Users/user/Library/Application Support/Google Chrome/SingletonSocket"

you will be requested to enter the password of you macOS account.

I had the same problem also with Signal. Same solution.

I've been having this problem for months with Catalina, and it was getting worse and worse. I tried malware scans, hardware checks, Etrecheck, removing plugins, clean reinstall of Chrome, etc. Nothing made it better... it actually seemed to be happening more. Tabs continued to crash with "aw, snap", and all different error codes 5, 6, 10, 11, etc. None of which give any useful information. The sites that cause the most instability are Facebook and Microsoft Teams. Both sites that are resource heavy, but tabs with not much going on would also crash.

The last thing I tried seems to be working (fingers crossed), and that was to Reset Settings to default. Because Chrome settings are synced like passwords and bookmarks, a clean install was maybe syncing back some bad setting that was causing crashing.

This issue started occurring immediately after being forced (company policy) to upgrade from Catalina to Monterey.

Sorry, but "Intel Hardware" is not a solution. It is, perhaps, a "contributing factor".

Yes, Chrome is a resource hog. Does that mean we're blaming Google for this issue? If Catalina could run Chrome without crashing, one could reason that Monterey should be able to as well.
