MacBook Pro 2020 strange or not charging behavior

Two days ago my MacBook Pro displays a strange charging behavior: even on power (original OEM, plugged in directly) it does not charge. Actually yesterday it went to 1% and died when I was working. I had to wait for an hour to be able to turn it back on.

I have the latest macOS Monterey 12.2.1 with “Optimized battery charging” and “Manage battery longevity” - checked. Also, I use my laptop plugged in most of the time.

My question to Apple is: OS algorithm is draining the battery on purpose, to extent it’s life? Then, why it drained so much to shut down the laptop? Why didn’t do that at night, for example?

1. Thank you for your answer, but there are some inconsistencies in your answer:

You said “It is perfectly Normal for Big Sur , Monterey to Pause / Suspend charging the battery beyond 80% and hold it at that level.” But my battery drained to 1% and the laptop shut down! Not 80%, which is totally ok.
2. You said ”One can nudge / over-ride this by clicking the Battery Icon on Desktop Top Bar and allow charging beyond 80%.” I don’t have that option. Do you see it in my screenshot?

I see your answer to multiple battery topics here, but problems vary. Can you please look at my screenshot and maybe have a solution to this battery draining to 1%?

Thank you!

One can start How to reset the SMC of your Mac and perform this action 3x consecutively - 1 bong, second bong and third bong and release the key combination.

Then Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac. and perform this action 3x consecutively.

If still now functioning as expected >> Find an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Visit a Genius at an Apple Store and have the computer / battery evaluated.

User wrote " OS algorithm is draining the battery on purpose, to extent it’s life " It actually the Opposite.

The " algorithm " is helping to decrease the number of " Full Charge Cycles " this battery endures.

A feature introduced into Big Sur & Monterey was to preserve the number of Full Battery Cycles

It is perfectly Normal for Big Sur , Monterey to Pause / Suspend charging the battery beyond 80% and hold it at that level.

One can nudge / over-ride this by clicking the Battery Icon on Desktop Top Bar and allow charging beyond 80%. From observations, it will Pause / Suspend again once reading 90%. Same procedure to over-ride and will charge to 100%
