Apple News+ Banner Flickering

When attempting to read an Apple News+ article, I get this super annoying flickering banner in the bottom lefthand corner. It's been happening for months--even accross reboots. Using a Mac Book Pro.

Please make it stop.

Strangely enough, and without doing anything additional (i.e. reinstalling the OS), today it's working correctly after being a problem for several months.

So, I'm good for now. If it returns, I will reinstall the OS and work with Support.

Thanks for all your help.

Regards,

Tony

Hey Tony Wilder,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities! We understand you're seeing a banner notification of some sort at the bottom corner when reading Apple News+ articles on your Mac. Let's see how we can help.

-Does this happen no matter the type of article you're reading, and the channel you're reading an article under?

-Does it appear to be unrelated content to what you're reading? In other words, maybe an ad of some sort?

If it seems like an ad, let's see if adjusting those settings can help: Control personalized ads on the App Store, Apple News, and Stocks

We'd like to also see if you can check in on your notifications related to News on Mac: Manage notifications from News on Mac

Keep us posted.

Regards.

Tony,

Thank you for clarifying this further. So we understand the issue is not the fact that the banner is appearing, but that the banner flickers or flashes while scrolling through the article. Got it.

Is your MacBook Pro running the latest macOS? You can check this under the Apple logo (top-left corner) > About This Mac > Software Update. If there are any updates pending, it would be a good idea to update since the issue is isolated to the Apple News application, which is built-in to macOS: Update macOS on Mac

If you're already using the latest macOS, or you cannot update macOS for specific reasons, we can continue with the steps below.

Let's have you boot up into safe mode. It’s a way to start up your Mac so it performs certain checks, repairs, emptying of system cache, and prevents some software from automatically loading: How to use safe mode on your Mac. Once in safe mode, check to see if the same behavior continues when using Apple News+ and opening those articles. Sometimes safe mode can successfully resolve some issues. With this being said, after testing in safe mode, restart and log in as normal to test the issue once more, to see if that helps resolve the issue. As an FYI, it is normal for your Mac to start up slower than expected while booting into safe mode.

If the issue remains, we will have you test a new user account next, to isolate if this is a user-specific issue, or a system-wide issue. Here’s how: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

Keep us posted, if you need continued support.

Thank you!

Tony,

Thanks for taking the time to perform those steps and report back!

So since the behavior does not occur within a new user account, it could be related to the settings or files in the original account. It could be related to a login item too. Let's move on to checking if a login item is interfering with the behavior. To do that, please follow Remove login items to resolve startup problems on your Mac. Test to see if the issue resolves in Apple News+, after you remove any of those items and restart.

Keep us posted.

Thanks for your continued efforts!

Tony,

Good to know. Thanks for this update. If that same login item is on the other user account that worked, then we can rule that out as being a possible cause currently.

We're going to suggest reinstalling macOS at this time: How to reinstall macOS. Should the issue remain after that step, you will want to continue working with Apple Support next. You can use this link to continue with support: Get Support

Take care and stay well.

Hi,

Thanks for your response. It's not that the banner appearing is a problem. The problem is that it flashes erratically while I'm trying to read an article. The flashing begins once I scroll within the article. Here is a sample of the issue from my Mac. https://youtu.be/mGdzQI_0zpw

-Only some articles have the banner and it seems to be only on Apple News+ content and not all of them. Clicking on the banner seems to bring me to the publication's page where there is list of several articles to choose from.

-It's a link to further articles related the the publication (i.e. Bloomberg Businessweek).

Example: Clicking on the the below....

Brings me to this page:

-I have personalized ads turned of on my Mac.

-I've stopped all notifications. Same result.

Regards,

Tony

Hi,

Well, we are getting somewhere. I am running the latest version of the os (12.2.1), booting under safe mode did nothing. HOWEVER...creating a test user account on this Mac and using my same Apple ID worked. Here's the video of what I believe is the correct behavior: https://youtu.be/AbeR-zmhMvY

So, at this point, the issue seems to related to my user account only. Any suggestions on how to fix?

Cheers,

Tony
