Clear Touch ID fingerprint records on MacBook pro

I have reloaded my 2017 MacBook Pro 15" with Monterey, but cannot use the Touch ID feature. It says "Fingerprint limit reached" even though there are no fingerprints to delete. I have tried all the Terminal commands I could find online to clear this, but none fix this issue.

Does anyone have recent experience with this, on Monterey, that can clear the data from the Secure Enclave? Frustrating that there is not a definitive "do this" that works for all.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Cheers

Hi RobTheRenoMan,

Thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities. We understand you are unable to enroll fingerprints on your MacBook Pro. Let's ensure these steps are being followed to check for enrolled fingerprints to be removed.

Use Touch ID on Mac

"Rename or delete fingerprints

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Touch ID .
  2. Do any of the following:
    • Rename a fingerprint: Click the text below a fingerprint, then enter a name.
    • Delete a fingerprint: Click a fingerprint, enter your password, click OK, then click Delete."

If you are unable to resolve the issue following this guide, you'll want to Contact Apple Support for help.

Cheers!
