When I plug my Yeti Blue mic into my MacBook pro and select the input as the mic, that side of things works but it seems to stop the sound output from using my MacBook speakers. Am I missing a setting somewhere or does this just not work?

From your post it appears that your MacBook Pro doesn't play sound when you connect your mic. Let's see how we can help. If you haven't done so already, restart your Mac. Sometimes a simple restart fixes minor issues. If that doesn't help, check your output setting: Change the sound output settings on Mac.
