Sorting order for photos

I have created numerous albums in my photos app and none of them sorts in correct date order. I've tried using the 'sort by title' and sort by oldest first' etc, but nothing seems to work. I haven't labelled the photos, I haven't changed the metadata, and the sequence of photo numbers (which is directly related to the date/time taken) is jumbled. Refer attached photo. Any suggestions for solving this would be appreciated!

Thanks for your reply Leonie

All the pics were taken by the same iPad Pro and at the identical location. I've moved all the pics to my Mac and deleted them from the iPad to free up memory. Looking at the metadata (by clicking on the 'i'), I get quite a different result to the "Image > Adjust Date&Time"! Why is that? Am I somehow corrupting something by the 'move'? I've attached 2 screenshots for IMG_2364 - one for each method.

Have the photos been taken by different cameras?

Or have you imported the photos at different times? Then it may be a problem of the timezone assigned to the date and time.

Try the following:

  • Open the image IMG_2384 that is out of sequence in Photos and go to the menu "Image > Adjust Date&Time". Check the timezone strip and the "closest city" shown in the panel.
  • Then open the image IMG_2356 in Photos and go to the menu "Image > Adjust Date&Time". Are the timezone strip and the closest city the same as for the previous image?

When I am having problems with photos in the wrong order because Photos has assigned the wrong timezone to some of the photos, I am changing the Date&Time system preferences, so Photos will display all dates&time with a timezone suffix, see: How to display the Date and Time Zone in … - Apple Community

I have never seen a photo, where no timezone is marked on the "Adjust Date&Time" map. Usually Photos should have used at least the current system time zone setting, when you imported photos without GPS locations assigned.

To fix this, try if the photo will be sorted correctly, if you set a time zone in "Adjust Date&Time". When you click on the map in "Adjust Date&Time" somewhere close to "Entrance Point", the time "Adjusted" may change". Change it back to match the "Original" time. This should fix the offset, if Photos should have been using a wrong timezone offset.
