When using screen mirroring on my new MacBook Pro 14 to connect to my smart tv for an Apple TV video, I get sound with a black screen. Can this be corrected?

That is down to the App you are using. Some Apps will not allow mirroring of protected content. The Apple TV app being one of them. Movies and TV shows will not mirror to avoid Piracy.

With that said, if you have a Smart TV that supports Airplay Mirroring, it should also support the Apple TV app directly, and you should be able to access the Apple TV App content directly on it.
