Installing macOS Monterey on an External SSD drive

I have been following the instructions posted by jack-19 on how to install macOS Monterey on an External SSD drive. One step is to download the macOS Monterey Installer. I have tried two methods:

1) Click Get on the MacOSMonterey installer in the App Store.

This bring up Software Update, in System Preferences, whereupon the Finding Update window appears and seems to cycle forever with nothing happening.

2) Start with the System Preferences > Software update.

This results in a 'Checking for Updates' window that, similarly cycles forever with nothing happening.

I am currently running Monterey version 12.2.1on a 2019 iMac.
