Default printer won't stay default

I have two printers connected to my M1 MacBook Pro Monterey 12.2.1.: a relatively new HP All-in-One with a wi-fi connection, and an older Brother label printer with a USB connection. I have the HP selected as the default printer in Preferences. But when I want to print a document, Pages or PDF, the print command defaults to the label printer, even though the label printer is turned off. I know that I can check each time I print to see that the correct printer is selected, but I don't see why I should have to.

Any suggestions?

system Preferences > Printers & Scanners ...

'Default Printer' can be specified as either "last printer used" or a specific printer off your list of installed printers.
