iMessage Messages iCloud Sync not working – Enable this account Checkbox missing

Dear Community,

I was wondering if anyone has experienced a similar problem and would be able to shine some light on the iMessage/Messages iCloud Sync issue that I am having.

I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro (currently running macOS Monterey 12.2.1 with a clean install) and am having trouble with the syncing of iCloud Messages.

On my previous MacBook Pro (running Catalina) this works without any problems, however on the new one running Monterey I am missing the Checkboxes “Enable this account” and “Enable Messages in iCloud” with the accompanying “Sync Now” button. [see attached screenshots]

On my iPhone 7 (iOS 14.8) everything looks to be set up correctly.

I searched the internet for this issue and other people seem to have the same problem [https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/messages-sync-error-monterey-clean-install.2322480/] but so far I could not find any solution.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be the issue and how to fix it?

Many thanks in advance!

Best Regards

I too struggled for hours to get this working. The solution is to be found in the Apple ID pane of System Preferences. Quit Messages. Then in Apple ID ensure that iCloud Drive is enabled and in its Options... ensure that both imagent and sociallayerd are both enabled (I had turned them both off before opening Messages as I didn't know what they were). Then open Messages and the Enable Messages in iCloud checkbox appears and after turning it on the messages start downloading.
