converting DVDs to iCloud

I want to know how to convert DVDs and place them into iCloud for storage. Some years ago I thought I would convert all of my VHS home movies onto DVDs to save them for future use as VHS players were made obselete by DVDs. That was a good idea until DVDs were made obsolete by the cloud. Now, most computers don't include DVD readers so I want to send my DVDs into cloud storage but I am unsure of what program I should use (I want to edit some of the DVDs) and to figure out the best way to store them so my family can access them with ease. Can anyone help?

Hello there walshsemail,

Thanks for posting here on the Apple Support Communities! This is a place where other Apple users can submit questions or respond to others to help lend a hand. Let's take a closer look as we do our best to provide some additional insight.

We understand you're wanting to save DVD movies to your Mac so you can then also upload them to the iCloud as well. This is something that can be done, but you'll need to look into third-party applications that offer this ability.

There may be some you could look for in the Mac App Store. Use search terms like "DVD Ripper" or "DVD Converter". Then use the reviews and app descriptions to make the best choice for your needs. The App Store is a safe place to download apps that have been vetted by Apple in some way.

Once you download the videos locally to your Mac, you can always import them into the Photos app and make any edits using iMovie:

You may also want to consider creating a duplicate backup of all of these movies on an external hard drive or using Time Machine. In case something ever happens with your iCloud or computer, that secondary backup will always be there as a plan B.

We hope this helps get you pointed in the right direction.

Take care.

Hey there walshsemail,

You're very welcome, we're glad we could help lend a hand and get you started! To share them, you can try using iCloud's sharing features as described here: How to share albums in Photos on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac

Another option may be to use a video hosting service, or uploading them somewhere.

Then your videos can only be watched by someone when you send them the direct link to the video.

Good luck!
