We appreciate the additional details! If you open the Messages app and scroll to the very bottom of your message threads, do you see an alert there similar to "Downloading Messages from iCloud"? If so, you'll need to connect to both power and a strong, trusted Wi-Fi network and allow that process to finish. Once it does, you should then see the attachments to remove. Thanks for participating in Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're unable to find storage being used by the Messages app, and would like to delete it to free up space. It sounds like this data is coming from the attachments within the message threads. To delete the attachments, take a look at the steps under "Delete texts and attachments in Messages" here: Manage your iCloud storage
