Why is "cap" not working in dictation?

Hi, I am using an iPhone 12 Pro Max on iOS 15.3.1. First of all, iOS voice dictation is absolutely atrocious. It is nothing but a problem and a headache. It’s disgraceful.

In Apple’s own literature, it explicitly states that you can capitalize the first letter of a new word by saying "cap" before the word. However, this happens maybe one out of five times. It is beyond frustrating. Completely inconsistent. And I am speaking clearly, slowly, and accurately.

When I was on Android, I used to be able to write paragraphs and paragraphs without issue, but I can’t get through a single sentence with iOS voice dictation.

It’s either capitalizing words randomly, forgetting to capitalize the first word after a period, forgetting to capitalize the first word of the sentence, or creating sentences that make no grammatical sense AT ALL. Can someone please explain the problem? I thought Apple was supposed to have some of the best AI in the world.

Does the "cap" shortcut work or not? Can someone confirm?

Thanks.

Same issue with ‘cap’ on an iPad Air Gen 4 and iPhone 12 Mini. Both running 15.3.1.

I use either the microphone on the device or my Airpod Pros’ microphone.

Took a local class on ‘iPad Tips & Tricks’ and the instructor described Dictation.

After the class I asked him about capitalizing the first letter of a word.

He tried ‘cap’ on his device (also 15.3.1) and it didn’t work.

I contacted Apple Support. The second level agent I worked with had the same experience.

Most of the time ‘cap’ doesn’t work. Sometimes it would.

Nightflyre9 - I have a question. When you speak ‘cap’ and then the word, what ultimately gets placed into the app?

Does it put the word ‘cap’ into your text? Or is it ignored?

Do you often see that the word ‘cap’ is getting transposed into a different word? Perhaps ‘cat’?

Have you ever noticed while dictating that the text looks correct (properly capitalized) then when you stop talking and

wait a few seconds the text gets redone and the capitalization disappears?

fwiw, I told the Apple agent I was going to wait for 15.4 and try this again.

Hey there, and welcome to Apple Support Communities Nightflyre9,

From our understanding, you are having issues with capitalizing the first letter of a new word. We can certainly understand your concern and are here to help.

We would like to ask you a couple of questions in order to get a better understanding. First, is there any background noise when you are performing the voice dictation? Also, what is your Wi-Fi connection or internet strength when this happens? Finally, we would like you to check out this link for more information on how to use dictation on your device and see if everything matches up on your end: Use Dictation on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

We thank you for your answers, they will help guide us to the next troubleshooting step.

Kindest regards!
