How do I clear excessive space used by Podcast app (both on latest software)

I know that similar questions have been asked before but they either went unanswered of the suggestions were tried and did not work.

I use the Podcasts app on my iPhone and iPad (both are on the latest versions of the app and iOS) and both have bloated storage. I automatically delete played episodes and the Downloaded view only shows the expected unplayed episodes.

Despite using the app correctly, it is now using over 15Gb of data when the podcasts themselves only add up to 800Mb.

How do I get the other 14Gb back?
