my brand new MacBook Pro M1 max is super slow, and application like indesign and vectorworks are constantly crashing. My old MacBook Pro from 2015 was much better

You need the current versions of InDesign and Vectorworks that are officially supported on the shipping version of Monterey 12.2.1. Crashing means you may have installed other software that is not compatible, or ill-advised (such as any anti-virus, so-called "cleaner" applications, and other crud).


If this is still a 16 GB RAM configuration, it is likely below the minimum advisable RAM for those two applications. If Vectorworks is still an Intel compiled application, it may not be entirely compatible with Rosetta2 emulation either.


I suggest you boot your M1 Max into Safe Boot mode and see if it still crashes. Then reboot and test those applications again for stability.
