ios 15 making icons too small and crowded on ipad

The person who started this thread had the same issue I do and that was last year, so this is probably shouting into the wind, but here goes.

In 14.8.1 I had the choice on my ipad between "Larger" or "More" Icons. Got a new ipad, and in 15.2 that choice has been replaced by a toggle switch that says "Use Large app icons." When I turn this on, it makes the icons larger but it doesn't adjust the spacing, which makes them look very crammed together.

This is not an improvement.

At this point I presume I am stuck with the situation, but I feel it important to register my distaste.
