Nothing activates it. It works directly. You can use the numeric keypad to enter numbers in any app that receives text. You can use it with the default calculator App to enter numbers and operations for calculations if you want.
If you have to done so, pair the keyboard to the Mac by following the steps here: link-> Set up your Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, or Magic Trackpad with your Mac - Apple Support
It does not on its own open a calculator or do operations. It just adds keys for you to do that more conveniently when in apps that can take inputs or operations like the calculator app.

I ordered the iMac directly from Apple in January, and I was advised to purchase the extension to the keyboard (at additional cost) at that time.
It is all one unit, and came as part of the new iMac 12.2.
I bought MacOS Monterey for dummies but cannot find info there.
What activates this keyboard? I thought it would work like a calculator but I have been unable to turn it on.
Thank you for your time but this is so frustrating. As I mentioned previously, I tried to find an answer in a how-to book; to no avail.
What extension did you buy exactly? Does it not have its own instructions?
Can you identify the exact make and model of whatever it is you bought?
I checked my receipt from Apple and this is what it said:
"Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad - US English"

Then you don't need to do anything. The Keyboard is one single unit with all the sections. Just pair the keyboard normally and the numeric keypad will automatically work.
I tried Pages and Mail; both receive numbers but it did not work.
What app should I have so that it will work as a calculator?
