iMac stuck on "Downloading 1 item"

My iMac said in order to sync my iPhone 12 to iMac that I needed to download an app. I clicked on download, the progress bar appeared with a picture of an iPhone "Downloading 1 item" and since then nothing has happened. Progress bar started but has not moved in over an hour with no progress.

syncing ipad problems When I try to sync my ipad (iOS 16.4.1) with my macbook (Monterey 12.6.5), the process gets stuck on "Syncing (Step 3 or 4) – Determining tracks to sync" and stops there. There is very little in the way of data to be synced. Should take a few seconds. I see this problem has been reported before and the discussion culminated in the suggestion to seek help from Apple Support. Did so. They answered quite quickly. A very nice guy but he had no clue what he was doing. He got me to reinstall the operating system on the Macbook and was "very sure" it would fix the problem. It did not. Any advice?

Hello dcwarrior,

Have you tried disconnecting your iPhone and restarting your Mac to see if the item downloads successfully, so you can complete the sync? To restart, choose Apple menu () > Restart.

Afterwards, connect your iPhone again and let us know if the download completes, and you're able to sync.
