Text Message Notifications from Android contacts not clearing from Apple Watch

I have an A2351 Apple Watch and an iPhone XR, running 15.3.1. The messages notifications on my watch won't clear after I've read the messages on my iPhone, even though my watch is set to "mirror my iPhone". This ONLY happens with text messages from people with Android phones. If I read an iMessage on my phone it immediately clears off the watch, but texts involving an Android do not clear from my watch, including group texts where one or more members of the group is sending messages from an Android. To clear them I have to go into the each conversation individually on my watch to clear the notifications badge.

I've already tried the standard forced restart on both devices, powered both devices down then powered on the iPhone first and then Watch, wiped and restored the Watch, and this is still happening. Messages are set to "mirror my iPhone". How do I fix this?

Apple Watch SE, watchOS 8

I believe I've found a solution to my own problem:

– On your iPhone: Go to Settings –> Messages –> Send & Receive.

– Under "You Can Receive iMessages To and Reply From", deselect your phone number. You will be asked to confirm you want to remove the number from iMessage and FaceTime. Click Remove.

– After a few seconds, add the phone number back.

I've tested this over the last couple of days, and SMS messages are being marked as read on both my iPhone and my watch now. I'll report back if this changes, but for now the problem is resolved!
