Studio Display as second screen for iMac?

I don't need the Mac Studio for now, but would like to use the new monitor as a second screen for my current iMac, if this is possible. (I will later likely get the Mac Studio, and then use my iMac as the second screen, and the 2022 monitor as my primary monitor.)

Is this possible?

In reviewing these posts, hcsitas seems to have answered my question right from the start with this statement from Apple (below). I am now going to order the Studio Display as the second screen for my iMac.

If you believe I'm about to waste my money, please explain your reasoning, and soon.

Thanks (for the final time, I hope)!

Studio Display is compatible with the following Mac models

running macOS Monterey 12.3 or later:

Mac Studio (2022)

16-inch MacBook Pro (2019 or later)

14-inch MacBook Pro (2021)

13-inch MacBook Pro (2016 or later)

15-inch MacBook Pro (2016 or later)

MacBook Air (2018 or later)

Mac mini (2018 or later)

Mac Pro (2019 or later)

24-inch iMac (2021)

27-inch iMac (2017 or later)

👍, but be aware that the longer you wait the lesser your iMac is worth as a trade-in. Furthermore, although the expensive Studio Mac is being heavily pushed in discussions as a natural replacement for the iMac 27, there’s nothing from Apple to suggest the more reasonably priced M1 mini isn’t. Unless you have unusual processing demands, you might want to consider trading-in your iMac for the M1 mini and adding the Studio Display to the shopping cart. Apple Credit can help ease the payments. Be sure to mention “hcsitas” so I get my 20% commission 😁…(joke)

My subject line is my question. I have an iMac. I don't want Mac Studio (yet). I do want a high quality second screen for my iMac. Can I use the Studio's Monitor as the second screen for my iMac?

If you don't think this is possible, please share your reasoning, with a technical explanation (or some very clear statement from Apple).

Thanks in advance!

The M1 can easily handle Photoshop. Compatible means it works as designed, all features. No distinction is made between the Studio or the Mini wrt the Studio Display when it comes to compatibility - both are “compatible”.

I would go with the M1 mini, the Studio Mac is vast overkill. IMO, a square tub of vanilla ice cream is better value…and more fulfilling 😁
