"How can I stop Music from playing when AirPods are put in ear?: There is no music playing before placing them in my ears. Apple Music starts up on its own whenever I place the earbuds."

Turn Off "Automatic Head Detection":

  1. Go Here: Turn off Automatic Head Detection or Automatic Ear Detection - Apple Support
  2. As it Reads: "Your AirPods automatically stop playing audio when you take them off, and resume playback when you put them back on. You can change this setting."

Where to go from here ---

A. Start with Contacting Apple:

Contact Apple Support back, if you never heard back from them.

Apple Contact Info:

Why the Wait:

Phone calls are taking a bit to go through at the moment, due to lots of calls. With the Coronavirus Pandemic, many are at home at the moment, with much time on their hands to contact Apple. So, just stay on the line, and you will get through :)

and...

B. Report this to Apple:

Do Your Part:  Question is--> "If thousand of people have said this too, then have they reported it to Apple yet?" Apple might find a fix if reported enough, but they'll never know about your side of the issue, until it is reported to them. So, report this to Apple. The more feedback Apple receives on this, the more they will know what is occurring, and fixes to include in fixes to come.

Contacting Apple Support:

  1. Go here: Feedback - AirPods - Apple
  2. Select: "Bug Report" for the "Feedback Type"
  3. Comment: on when you came across this issue, and how you have troubleshot it this far.
  4. Proceed from there as necessary.

In Apple Communities (which is monitored by Apple staff):

Music automatically plays when I put my airpods on. - 18,322 requests

AirPods automatically start playing music when I connect them - 779 requests

Music Automatically Playing - 539 requests

It appears that Apple staff regard the suggestion to "Turn off ... detection" as a definitive answer, but most of these nearly 20,000 users are not happy with that answer. Certainly that answer does not work for me.

I have posted a message in Feedback, and I will recontact support tomorrow. Thanks for trying to help.

"Problem persists. Apple Music app opens itself and is foremost on login screen whenever I have AirPods in. Very irritating. I don't like the idea of trashing the Music app, but unless Apple comes up with a fix, I may need to do so."

-------

About Trashing Music App:

No worries. You couldn't trash the Music app, even if you wanted to, because it is built into the iOS. Strangely enough, sometimes, builtin apps get deleted, in which case, you'd have to reset the Home Screen Layout. After the reset, you'll have to add back all the widgets that you can recall being back on there. So, write down what is currently on the Home Screen, prior to the reset.

Scroll to: Reset the Home Screen and Apps to their Original Layout

  1. Go to: Settings
  2. Tap: General
  3. Tap: Reset
  4. Tap: Reset Home Screen Layout
  5. Then... Add the app back

I have seen that advice many places. I want my pods to know they are in my ear (i.e., automatically connect with the phone), but not to start up an app. My old AirPods worked fine (never played music on their own) and I have not changed any settings.

An Apple genius said he would look into it and get back to me, but it has been days with no message. In these community discussions, I have noted that over a thousand people have said they have this problem too.

I just discovered that if I leave Apple Music in pause mode, music does not start playing as soon as I put in my AirPods.

The Apple Music app still starts up automatically – and I am still hoping for a fix for that – but at least I am not getting noise in my ears every time I put the AirPods in.

I (and evidently 20,000 other AirPod owners) are still waiting to hear how to keep the Apple Music app from starting up automatically whenever I put my pods in my ears.
