Chapter markers in online videos (NOT DVDs)?

There are a number of long online videos (generally tutorials) which have "chapter" markers or links posted below them which enable you to jump quickly to specific parts of the video.

  1. How do you do it?
  2. Can it be done with non-online videos . . . ones that are stored on your computer hard drive or memory sticks?

I am not at my mac to check this now but I remember that that it worked - but I was exporting a mov file at the time, not mp4.

Two things you might try:

a) see if chapters markers are available using another application, like VLC

b) export selecting Video and Audio instead of Computer and see if the resulting mov file has chapters accessible in Quicktime Player.

I made an mp4 this morning using Monterey 12.2.1, FCPro 10.6.1, Compressor 4.6.

All went well including Chapter Markers.

When completed I opened it in the QuickTime Player and the UI appeared different.

Apple appear to have consolidated some controls into what I would call a "more" button that looks like a Fast Forward symbol.

Here are screen shots of what appears on mine:

I thought you had to add the chapters to the Description section for YouTube. The only requirement is that the first marker must start at 0:00 or 00:00 - like so:

00:00 - Intro

00:45 - chapter 1

02:30 - chapter 2

etc.

YouTube automatically creates links of the "timecode" and puts the chapter marker bar in the video automatically...

... as I understand it.

Somebody may have a script that will take a project (with chapter markers placed) XML export and convert it automatically. There is an app you can buy that will do this — Ripple Training did a vid on it:

I made an mp4 of a recital about 10 months ago with around 30 Chapter Markers and the Thumb Drives I duplicated had them showing in the QuickTime Player just fine as Tom described using the disclosure triangle.

Maybe something has changed with a recent version.

I will test drive the latest FCPro and OS tomorrow.

This feature is something I use so I hope it still works. I have another recital coming up soon.

There was absolutely no sign of the chapter and iMac icon. I was clicking everything in sight and also empty spaces over and over again. Closing and restarting QT.

Then when Tom's post came about it working again I had another try and miraculously it worked for me.

Almost as though someone from Apple was controlling our computers . . .
