Maps voice volume

When using the maps voice directions, the volume of the voice is not very loud at all. If music is playing I have it set to pause when directions are given but even then it’s quieter than the music, making it hard to hear. My mom does not have this problem with her phone. When her phone is giving directions not through the car it’s louder than mine when it’s through the car. We both have iPhone 12s and got them at the same time. The only difference is that mines the pro and hers isn’t. I know that before you could set the spoken directions volume to loud but can’t anymore. So I’m wondering if anyone else has this problem.

No CarPlay. For the change with buttons it’s off but I turned it on and tried it. No headphone safety. For setting a navigation, I tried it and used the volume buttons but there was no difference. I tried with silent mode on and off too. I have compared settings on my moms phone and mine to see if there’s any difference and I haven’t found any.

Hello Odessly,

Is your iPhone connected to your car when the volume of spoken directions in Maps is lower than expected, or is this happening when you're listening through your iPhone speakers?

If you go to Settings > Maps > Spoken Directions, is 'Directions on Radio' enabled?

Is your iPhone running the latest software version, which is iOS 15.3.1? You can check that in Settings > General > About, and then go to Settings > General > Software Update to complete an update if needed.

Thanks!

It happens for both, through car speakers and through the phone speakers. My car doesn’t have Bluetooth so I use an AUX cord for my own music and for maps. Which then plays through the car. My music would be playing and when directions are spoken for maps, the music pauses but the spoken directions are way quieter than the music to the point that it’s hard to hear. My phone is up to date with IOS 15.3.1 but it has been doing this way before this version. I have deleted the maps app and reinstalled it but it’s not any better. I know that in a previous IOS version you could choose the volume of spoken directions, but can’t anymore. The update after that version is when it happened. But when you could set the volume of spoken directions, I always had it at loud because the normal volume was too quiet.

Thanks for working with us on this, Odessly.

Let's make sure the car stereo has the latest firmware and try these steps to see if it helps: How to connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your car - Apple Support

Connect using USB playback
1. Restart your device and your car.
2. Make sure that your device is unlocked and on the Home screen.
3. If possible, try to connect using another cable or USB port. Check the manual that came with your car to learn how to connect an Apple device.
4. Check your charging port for any debris or damage. Make sure that your charging cable is properly inserted into the port.
5. Update your device.
6. Make sure that your stereo is using the latest firmware from the car manufacturer. Check your car's manual for more information.
7. Try playing audio from a different app. If you can't play audio from a third-party app, contact the app developer for help. If you can't play audio from an Apple app, contact Apple Support.

iOS 15.4 was just recently released, make sure to update to the latest version and then test again: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

As a final step, you can reset all settings on the iPhone: Return iPhone settings to their defaults - Apple Support

•Reset All Settings: All settings—including network settings, the keyboard dictionary, location settings, privacy settings, and Apple Pay cards—are removed or reset to their defaults. No data or media are deleted.

Use this method if nothing else seems to have resolved the issue.

Keep us updated.

Cheers!

Our cars don’t have Bluetooth. The same thing happens in her car and mine and have different cords. If her phone is giving directions it is louder than mine when using the AUX cord and music playing in both cars. Her phone alone, just through the phone speaker, giving directions is louder even when my phone goes through the car speakers for maps spoken directions. For example if my phone is playing music and has directions spoken through the AUX cord and my moms phone is giving directions through her phone speakers, her phone is louder than mine.

Odessly,

If you’re connected to your vehicle with an AUX cable versus a USB cable are we correct in understanding that your vehicle does not support CarPlay?

Here are a couple more things to check and compare between devices.

Settings > Sounds > Change with Buttons. Is this on or off?

Settings > Sounds > Headphone Safety, anything here restricting sound?

Next, if you haven’t already, we’d like to have you set up a navigation on your iPhone in the Maps app and then as it is speaking the navigation use the volume keys on your iPhone to raise the volume. Chances are this will only work while the navigation is happening, so you’ll have to perform this then. After that connect to your vehicle and give it a test. Is there any change from your device?

Thanks.
