Erroneous battery indicator on iphone6s

This is the original battery on a three year old Iphone 6S bought three years ago. Last Friday it showed a sudden and massive battery drain down to 1%. When I fully recharged it twice and switched it on and off but the same thing happened. I have used the phone quite a lot on low power mode with the indicator still stuck on 1%. I assume that eventually, it will run out of juice and close down. What should I do then? Is there any way of recalibrating it?

There is a recalibration method on those old phones, indeed the 6S was the last to need it and to show these step changes in battery indicator. Yes it will go on for a long time on 1% then stop unexpectedly.

However my experience is that spending $49 on a new battery from Apple will give it a new lease of life. Three years is old for any phone battery.

If you want some temporary relief you can try the old trick.

Flatten the phone completely with a full brightness screen video and the flashlight on.

Leave it flat for 1 hour, no more no less.

Charge to 100% then leave on charge for 1 hour longer.

Force restart the phone by holding the side button and home buttons in together until the Apple Logo appears then let go.

When it starts up again, take off charge and see how it goes.
