Can I use a Thunderbolt 4 monitor with a Mac mini M1 computer?

If I have a max mini M1 that has a Thunderbolt 3/USB 4 port, can I use a Thunderbolt 4 monitor with that computer?

I stand corrected, thanks.

I would use HDMI-HDMI for video and connect the monitor’s USB upstream port (not Thunderbolt 4 upstream port) to the mini’s USB A port. This method completely avoids Thunderbolt 4 because:

  • the monitor’s stated maximum resolution is compatible with the mini’s HDMI port bandwidth, so TB 4 serves no purpose other than to provide bandwidth for the monitor’s LAN port which you probably don’t need
  • the Thunderbolt 4 upstream port of the monitor will likely attempt to power the mini without making any attempt to enquire if the mini needs powering or not, which could cause mystery problems, perhaps even damage the mini’s USB C port over time.

To be honest, I would avoided this display. It’s vast overkill/over-engineered + terrible support for Apple connectivity issues + guaranteed blame-game ping pong if you run into issues. Good luck!
