How can I get command + i to italicize instead of opening Mail?

Making the command + i shortcut open the Mail app is quite possible the dumbest thing ever. I just want to use italics. How can I fix this? The suggestion on this link didn't work for me: Disable Safari's "Email This Page" shortc… - Apple Community

What command-i does depends on context. For example, in the Finder, it gives you the Get Info box on whatever you've selected. And in every text editing situation I'm familiar with that supports italics, it will italicize whatever word or words you have selected.

Do you have editable text selected? If you have nothing selected, then you may see a different response?

I have just tested this in Safari and, selecting text and using command-I applies italics as expected.

Sometimes it will activate the italics button and italicize anything I type afterward if I use command-i--that's what I meant about it not seeming to matter. So it does sometimes work without text selected--like just then, I typed command-i, then wrote out "does" and it came out italicized. Other times, when I'm working on a Google platform, it opens Mail and starts a mail this page message 🙄
