Monterey 12.3.1 External Monitor/Display Issue - No Longer Outputting Signal

After updating my Mac Mini today to 12.3, my monitor now no longer displays an image via USB-C, just keeps saying on no signal on the monitor.

I have tried HDMI and same issue. The odd occasion it will display a picture but once I shutdown or restart the mac mini it does not display a picture. The mac is booting up. I have had to resort to connecting it to my old TV with HDMI connection.

This is so frustrating

I have tried resetting the SMC which had not appeared to work, also tried downgrading the displayport version from 1.4 to 1.2 (on the odd occasion I did get a picture) but that has not worked either.

Has anyone else having this issue?

The monitor I use is a BenQ SW270C.

This is really doing my head in and was wondering if anyone else has got a fix to this.

So this is related to a previous long-standing bug with DisplayPort, which forced all of us to go into our monitor settings and switch from DP1.4 to DP1.2 so our external monitors would work. Apparently in "fixing" this bug, Apple decided that checking autonegotiation was redundant and the user needs to manually fix things.

The solution is to set your monitor to DP1.4. For a BenQ monitor, that is going to suck, because if you don't have a valid source input, it won't give you the display settings menu. You'll need to hook up a second computer to the monitor without macOS 12.3 so the monitor has a signal, then go into the menus (System -> Advanced -> DisplayPort) and switch back to DP 1.4. Your monitors will work.

I'm so happy to have had to troubleshoot this in the middle of a workday. It was problems like this that caused me to switch from Windows to Mac over twenty years ago.

Continue testing everything I have. Unfortunately do not have a single monitor that supports DP1.4, only DP1.1 and DP1.2. Absolutely useless now. Both Mac pro 2013 and Mac mini 2018 are now paperweight. Now thinking on how I can roll them back to big sur or at least 12.2.1…

Absolutely disappointed! Keeping all the rest of our macs in the office without updates for now.

Some MacBook Pro models cannot see the update. Perhaps this

varies, due to hardware differences between build-model years.

I just installed 12.3.1. on my Mac Mini 2020. The changelog only mentions the Mac Mini 2018 and my second monitor that's connected via a DVI -> USB-C adapter still says "No Signal" after a restart, even though Monterey still lists it in the "Display" settings and I can still move the mouse cursor to it. My main HDMI->HDMI monitor is still working fine. Ffs Apple, get your s...tuff together!

If both your secondary monitor and your Mac power cable are connected to the USB HUB then to your Mac, and your secondary monitor is NOT working and your machine's power source is Battery, try this:

  1. Unplug your USB HUB
  2. Unplug the power source cable from the USB HUB
  3. Connect the power source cable to any USB Type C port on your machine - you should notice that your machine is now charging and is connected to the power adapter
  4. Connect the USB HUB to another USB Type C port on your machine - you should notice your secondary monitor now turning ON
  5. (Optional) Unplug the power source and connect it back to the USB HUB - I did this because I like my wirings clean looking :)

This is my first time encountering an issue with my Apply machine after an upgrade, and I am disappointed that Apple does not have any direct source of solution for an obvious bug.

I had a very helpful & competent APPLE 🍎 supporter doing this together with me with a lot of patienece, the screen came back after the process described by you. I said I don’t believe it 😵And see, it went to sleep after about 2‘. He asked me if I would prefer to work wit a supervisor or wait for an update…. I chose the later and hope it gets solved with 12.3.2🙏🏻 However he tried everything. In 🍎 I trust. Thanks for the time invested 🙏🏻

kristel147, I can only hope your plea is answered. I have been down for a month now for my second monitor and it is having a profound impact on my ability to work. After the .3 update my monitor now only kinda works. It does sometimes display properly then all throughout the day it dims to where I can barely see what it on it, then gets bright, then blacks out completely and continues to behave like that all day long. The wait for a fix on such a simple peripheral is tiring.

I am beyond frustrated that this problem has been going on for over a month. We have a brand new MacBook Air with Monterey iOS 12.3.1 already installed. When we have tried to make it work with literally every monitor in the office (all LG 27UD88-W), the same black out problem occurs. We have had IT on it all week. It is completely random as to when the monitor will work and when it won't. FIX THIS NOW, APPLE. HOW HAVE YOU NOT FIXED THIS YET? It is clearly happening with all monitors, not just LGs. This is profoundly impacting our ability to work. I have been a loyal Apple customer for over 15 years but for the first time, I am actually considering moving us to PCs. I resent Apple's proprietary issues, as this is certainly not the first time, nor will it be the last, that a non-Apple product won't work with an Apple product. I AM SO MAD.
