notifications after iOS 15.4 update

Hi! I am having a problem with my iPhone XR notifications after iOS15.4 update. I receive no notifications unless I open the app (Gmail, Messenger, WhatsApp etc.). I have restarted my phone, checked the Notifications in the Settings (the apps individually, turned off Scheduled summary etc), Background App Refresh is turned on for all the apps etc, Focus mode is not turned on etc.

Also the apps (Gmail, Messenger etc) only seems to update content only after opening the app- i.e. new emails/ conversations etc appear in the app only after the app is opened.

iPhone XR, iOS 15

erle86,

Thanks for getting back to us. Since the issue seems to only affect third-party apps, you can follow this page's steps: If an app on your iPhone or iPad stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or won’t open. Deleting and re-downloading the apps may help rule out any software issues they are having.

Since updating to 15.4, several of my apps are no longer giving me notifications. These are not only third-party apps but are also apps that came on the phone originally. When I go to the notifications in the settings, the apps are not even in the list so I can turn the notifications back on. What do I do when the app does not even appear in the notifications list so that I can turn the notifications back on?

Upgrading to 15.4 broke notifications in the default messaging app. this is not a third party app issue. It’s an Apple iOS issue. Please don’t try to blame it on the apps when you broke your own app. I get badge notifications but no banners and it does not go to my watch any longer, even with the Notification Center selected. Please stop blame shifting and fix your OS.

You are not alone. Several of my default apps are no longer giving me notifications. Deleting the app and reinstalling it worked for some of them but not for some of the others. I still have default apps that no longer give me notifications. I am working my way through the App Store trying to find alternatives for the ones that I can’t fix.

So I actually found that a lot of my messages which I had never set to Hide Alerts, suddenly had both Hide Alerts, Send Read Receipts and Share Focus Status enabled. In doing more research, I am finding the settings are not the same for all of my chats and I don't know how they were changed or what was used to determine what their default status should be. I have since turned off the features I don't normally use and am now receiving my notifications again.

I have found a couple different workarounds..To get notifications on my Mail I had to delete the app and turn it back on and when it came back on it asked me if I wanted to allow notifications so that fixed that one. On the Reminders app, I added a new reminder. When I did that it activated the notifications again for all of my reminders. I don’t know why it worked, but it did. Passing it along hoping it will help somebody else as well.

Sorry, but I am not okay with this answer. Are you really suggesting we all delete and reinstall our third party apps?

Before I even looked online, I reset all notification settings manually and restated my iPhone XR - numerous times.

It took me weeks now, to even find the problem online. Thankfully I stumbled over it here in the english discussions. In German, there is nothing!

It angers me a great deal, that apple would try to ignore a bug in it's 15.4 update.

so please, please, fix this!

I have the same problem.

However, the problem is not with the notifications, they work. The problem is one step before that. IOS can only notify you when messages are received.

In Whatsapp you can see the behavior well.

When someone sends me a message, the sender of the message only has one check mark - this means that the message was not received by the recipient (me).

I do not receive the message until I open the app or receive a notification from another app (where the problem does not exist).

I was able to determine the behavior of Whatsapp in connection with LinkedIn.

When I receive a message in Whatsapp that only has one check mark at the sender, I do not receive a notification. However, if I subsequently receive a notification from LinkedIn, for example, then I also receive the expected Whatsapp message (with notification!) and the sender of the Whatsapp message receives the second checkmark for the message.

The problem persists even after reinstalling IOS - without importing a backup. Wifi & mobile data work, it can't be due to other settings either.
