Photos not going to photo stream IOS 15.4

This has happened many times before but today..no photos are going to photo stream from my iPhone XR. Check everything..iCloud storage has lots of space, photo stream is turned on as well as shared albums, have rebooted, have dialed photo stream and reenabled....still..no photos are copied.

Running 15.4.

I fixed it by turning off HEIF upload.

Go to Settings/Camera/Formats and select "Most Compatible".

I think this is a bug in 15.4. Hopefully Apple will release a fix soon. If you can wait a little longer, hopefully Apple will release a bug fix and you'll be able to get all your photos without reverting to the old format.

Are you trying to use iCloud Photos and My Photo Stream together?

My Photo Stream and Shared Albums are not using the paid iCloud subscription, the storage used for My Photo Stream and Shared Albums is free. Do not enable iCloud Photos, if you want to use My Photo Stream. You will not see My Photo Stream on devices that are syncing with iCloud Photos.

Are you saying you can drag photos from the iCloud library on Mac to the full photos library or do you need an intermediate step?

Thanks for your advice on this.

You would export the photos you want to archive with "File > Export" and then import them into your archive library.

With Photos 7 on Monterey we can import photos directly from one library into another library, but this is limited. Sadly, we cannot import photos from our iCloud Photos Library into a mother library, only from a local library.

If you are willing to spend some money on a nice tool, you could get yourself PowerPhotos. PowerPhotos makes it easy to move photos between libraries, even from the iCloud Photos Library, as long as the library is not using "Optimise Storage" with iCloud. See: https://www.fatcatsoftware.com/powerphotos/

Here are some details on moving photos, albums, metadata between libraries: https://www.fatcatsoftware.com/powerphotos/VersionedDocs/v5/copying_limitations.html

This is currently much more versatile than what can be done directly in in Photos 7: Import photos from another library in Photos on Mac - Apple Support

Since more than three years there is a warning in many Apple Support documents, that users with a new Apple ID may not be able to activate my Photo Stream at all, for example: (If My Photo Stream isn't updating – Apple Support (UK))

" If you've recently created your Apple ID, My Photo Stream may not be available. Use iCloud Photos to keep your photos and videos in iCloud. Find out more about iCloud Photos and My Photo Stream."

The writing is on the wall. It looks like Apple were keeping My Photo Stream alive, just barely, for the sake of long term users with older devices, that cannot be upgraded to support iCloud Photos or the manual syncing with the Finder instead of iTunes. All upgrades to iCloud are only available for iCloud Photos - a true syncing of all edited adjustments and metadata, support for Live Photos and videos and HEIF, a long term storage of media files, not just a temporary storage.

Have to disagree with the statement - iOS 15.4 disabled Photo Stream.

We run the following

  • iMac with macOS Mojave on 10.14.6
  • 2 x iPad mini (5th gen) on 15.4.1
  • 2 x iPhone 13 mini on 15.4.1

Had the same problem of it not working until we used the answer mentioned in this thread - setting camera format from High Efficiency to Most Compatible works great.

All the devices stream to each other perfectly now.

I have photo stream and shared on...iCloud photos is off. I have another iPhone and iPad using the same appleid and they work fine. I have tried to disconnect from photo stream, reboot iPhone and logoff my appleid...nothing has fixed the problem.

iCloud storage is fine. iPhone storage is fine. Only 15 pictures on my phone. Have even tried using cellular only.

When i take a pic I totally close the camera app.

My Photo Stream is yesterday's snow and will probably no longer be developed. Since more than three years is a warning in the Apple Support documents that users with a new Apple ID cannot even activate it and should use iCloud Photos instead.

My Photo Stream does not work for some new image formats and not for Live Photos or videos.

Try to set the the Camera.app on your device to "Most Compatible" to take photos in a format that My Photo Stream can transfer.

I know it is a pain for me but I am doing a full reset to see if that works....then installing from a back up..... Also I scheduled a call back from apple to see what the deal is.......we will see what they have to say. as for the full restore...........still waiting for the back up to load........Sorry to say it was a waste of time.....

I selected most compatible and cleaned out the entire stream...reset all devices and disconnected. Then reconnected all devices. Took pictures...nothing...then 2 days later the pictures showed up in the stream...go figure. It seems to be working now and I didn't change anything since the reset.

Horrible product and very disappointed that Apple is pushing us to store all photos in the cloud. Just another money making thing for Apple!

It is just sad that we have to change the settings, preventing us from using 4K videos at 60fps or other features, just because we need to stick to 'Most Compatible'. I like the fact that Photo Stream allows us to see our photos everywhere on another device but this doesn't make sense from Apple. Thank you, guys. I guess (sadly enough) that we will have to move to the cloud sooner than we thought.
