Remote printing

I use an Epson XP-8600 printer with my Mac mini (Mojave), normally connected by Wi-Fi and by a USB cable. When printing remotely from my iPhone SE (2020 version), however, I have encountered a curious problem: if I choose ‘Print’ on the phone, the photo tray is automatically chosen. But I usually want to print from the main tray (A4 paper), so I then scroll down to ‘Media & Quality > Feed from and choose ‘Main Tray’. What then happens is that the printer does indeed then print from the main tray, but in a 4” x 6” format in the middle of the A4.paper.  There seems no way of printing on the whole of A4 paper.

I think (but may be remembering wrongly) that this is a new behaviour. I should be very grateful for advice.

I have solved the problem! It turns out there is a setting for paper size in the main paper tray on the control panel of the printer itself. It was set to 4 x 6 inches. This is in itself curious. I very rarely in fact use remote printing, and when printing in the ordinary way from my Mac, this setting has never caused a problem, and therefore I had never even noticed that it exists. I have reset it to 'A4', and that has. solved the problem. But why Epson's technical people never referred me to this is a mystery!

Hello Michael,

Based on what you've shared this may be a question best suited for Epson directly. They'll have additional insight into how your printer interacts with your device, and the best way to print in the format you're looking for. You can contact them here: Welcome to Epson Support

You can find additional details about AirPrint in the following article, however, it sounds like you're familiar with the settings available to you. But this article may cover an option that was missed: Use AirPrint to print from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Regards.

I have corresponded with Epson's Support. They advised me to install iPrint on my phone. I have done so, but it does not seem to help much and is far more complicated than anything I require.

Here is a fuller description of my question: If I choose 'Print' on my phone, 'Paper. Size' is shown as '4 x 6 inches'. I can then choose from 'Disc (120 x 120 mm)', '4 x 6 inches (Photo)' and '4 x 6 inches (Plain Paper)'. But I want the paper size to be 'A4', from the main tray of the printer. If I then go down to 'Media & Quality' > 'Feed. From', I can choose 'Main Tray'. The printer does indeed then print on A4 paper from the main tray, but the image is still in 4 X 6 inch format in the middle of the A4 sheet.

If this is the normal behaviour, then I do not need to pursue this matter further. But if I ought to be able to choose 'A4' under 'Paper Size', then I should be most grateful to be told how to do so.
