Orange charging light stays on (MagSafe connection to apple-supplied charger) but won't charge to 100%.
Is there a problem with my mac and/or charger?
If I did check the optimised battery charging option then it would only charge to 80% if I generally only used it on the charger and not via battery.

You'd better check your MacBook Pro with Apple Diagnostics if it reports battery related error.

If it doesn't help, contact Apple Support or make Genius Bar reservation if there is retail AppleStore near you or find local Apple Authorized Service Provider to be examined your MacBook Pro there.

Thanks for the suggestion. The diagnostics were okay but I have seen other reports of the same issue in various forums.
It happened again tonight so I will book a genius bar appointment.
Nice catch. I had "Check for Updates" checked but I hadn't received a notification since 12.01
I will see if this changes the issue
