Apple TV 4th Gen Stuck In School Management

My Apple TV will not get out of school management, I have factory reset it, but when it connects to iCloud it downloads a configuration profile from my old school then immediately goes to the screensaver and wont go to homescreen or control Center.

Apple TV 4K, tvOS 15

Hey Mikey,

If a device is "managed", the profile (chunk of software that gives an institution control over settings on the device) is designed to not be removable by end users. It will be reloaded after every factory reset. It will need to be released by the Mobile Device Management admin (tech staff if you're at a school) in Apple School/Business Manager or your institution's MDM solution provider (Jamf, Meraki, e.g.).

If someone sold you a device that is still managed, it is likely stolen. It could have been an oversight, though, so if you can contact the organization to see if they can help. It is a quick and easy process if you have the right admin access. They will need the device serial number to track it down in the dashboard, so have that handy before you contact them.

Hope this helps,

J

If my understanding of you issue is correct, then unfortunately Apple config will not remedy the issue. The appletv box needs to be removed from the DEP list by the organization’s Apple MDM administrator before it will be usable outside the parameters of the organization it was first assigned to. See below for DEP explanation:

“When you pair SimpleMDM with a DEP account, SimpleMDM allows you to specify how your devices will be configured. These configurations, when saved, will be pushed to your DEP account on Apple servers.

Then, when a registered DEP device is turned on for the first time, it contacts the Apple DEP servers and checks for a configuration. It sees the SimpleMDM configuration that you created and applies it to the device.”

Hi Mikey,

please note I have not used this personally, this is information based on what I know from reading about these programs

So Apple School Manager using an MDM server is intended to deploy and manage a wide deployment of Apple devices. This can also include DEP(Device Enrollment Program). If this is all correct, even factory reset will still point the AppleTV box at the MDM server.

There is nothing that can be done to change this to the best of my knowledge. Think of itAs activation lock. Until that lock is removed the device cannot activate. Being on the DEP list, it cannot do anything but get pointed to School Manager MDM server. In other words, that AppleTV must first be removed from DEP (and maybe even the MDM server).

This is to the best of my knowledge, however, maybe another user can give you better information.
