Podcast Continuous Playback broken in 15.4 ?

Since the 15.4 update my podcasts have been stuck on continuous play, turning the toggle off in settings does nothing, they just keep autoplaying the next and don't stop between anymore. The external control setting also somehow keeps reverting to the default next/previous instead of my desired forward/back. bug? just me? iphone SE(2020)

This continues to happen in December 2023 on iOS 17.1.12. Nothing like going to sleep listening to nice pleasant sounds and having My Brother, My Brother, and Me come on at 2 am. (I love MBMBAM but there’s a time and a place.) Clearly Apple has known about this for years, knows how annoying it is, and doesn’t do anything about it.

Same here, I can’t fall asleep without listening to something either. I hated waking up to discover that my entire list has been marked listened and deleted from my device. Even worse is when the skip forward or back automatically switches to next/previous episode. Instead of going back 15 minutes, all of a sudden you have moved back three whole episodes.

I have reported it feedback assistant more than once and it hasn’t been addressed. I just got sick of it and moved all of my podcasts to overcast.

I have had exactly the same happen as the very first commenter said. I toggle “continuous playback” off, and it turns itself off after a couple of days; I have also had the podcasts just continue to play and when I check, the option is still toggled off. This then usually causes the podcast I just listened to, to start playing again (I also listen to them almost all day at work). I really hope Apple looks at this.

I believe the ‘continuous playback’ toggle determines whether additional episodes are automatically added to the ‘playing next’ queue. If episodes are already in that queue when you disable the toggle, it won’t remove them (but it does stop adding additional episodes—until it automatically retoggles, that is).

I think that likely explains what you’re experiencing, though I’m only basing this on what I’ve observed.

I spoke with Apple support today - attempting to describe some of the odd behavior of podcasts "playing without" activating the Apple podcast application. They disavowed all knowledge of reports of any issue with podcasts. Unfortunately, I do not have unlimited data on my Xfinity cell plan, and I was traveling. In three days it ate 9.1 GB of data. The continuous playback option flips to on, and continues to download podcasts! This cost me almost $100. Apple's behavior is REPREHENSIBLE! I have version 15.5.

Is there any way we can actually get a response to this - seems it has been going on for a while? I am so irritated as I use podcasts to sleep (as well as other times!) and now it just keeps playing all night. EVery night it resets to continuous playback, I fix it back and then it goes back again. My sleep is precious! When will Apple actually DO something?

I have 16.0.3 and this is happening to me for the first time. I’ve toggled the Continuous Playback option off at least 3 times in the last week, and today it turned back on again. This is very frustrating. @apple Perhaps just remove this setting if it doesn't work anyway and no one plans to fix it?

Still not understanding how there is no resolution or response here…

It is still happening with my iPhone 13, v. iOS 16.0.3.

It is an intermittent problem, and I have not yet identified a triggering event or action.

Automatically switching to continuous play is particularly irritating when I fall asleep to a podcast and wake up to learn that five more have been marked played.

At least I know now how to stop it — until the next time.

This has been going on for a while now. I've been waiting for a fix for months, but it never comes. It's either Apple doesn't care about it or they are happy with this "feature" and don't intend to do anything about it. This kind of bugs kinda pierces the narrative of quality products Apple is pushing.

I'm going to change app too. Peace.

Just purchased my first iPhone in April 2024 and this problem STILL exists even with ios 17.5.1! I listen to sleep stories to help me fall asleep and then get woken up an hour later when it plays the next episode. I turn off continuous playback and I'm experiencing the same problem as everyone else with Apple podcasts. This is ridiculous! How has it not been resolved for so long?!

Perhaps I have used this form a NUMBER of times for this and other issues and NONE of them have been resolved. And perhaps a large number of people have used said form with no results as well. Thus, our coming to the forums looking for some kind of solution or answer to the question of why the **** won't they fix a problem that people have been complaining about for ages.
