Microphone stops working regularly

iPhone 11 Pro Max (dual sim) on iOS 15.4

I have repeated issues with the phone's microphone somehow getting disabled by itself in apps like WhatsApp, Threema, LINE or FaceTime, when using both phone lines of my phone.

The microphone is clean, it works by itself (tested via recording audio & video) but very frequently whenever calling or receiving a call via web / wifi on the apps listed above, on either of my two lines, the microphone is not working all of a sudden. This happens on every WiFi network I may use, not just one. All app permissions are granted, microphone is enabled for all the apps in question. Also, when using "regular" cellular service for calling, the microphone works normally, on both lines.

The only way to "solve" this is to reset the phone's network and privacy preferences every time, then setup everything again, then the microphone works in every app, only for the same issue to start again one or two days later. Really annoying!

I realize there are many third-parties involved (router, internet provider, phone, apps etc etc) so I'm kind of expecting another round of "it's not us it's them" on the IT (non-)problem-solving merry-go-round......

Anyway, just sharing and hoping maybe someone out there was having similar issues or experiences and was able to identify and resolve the issue. Thanks in advance.

"Microphone stops working regularly: Thanks for the links, TheLittles. Yes I had already gone through Apple support links previously, and nothing solved the issue, which is why I decided to post the question here......"

Reset All Settings:

This this is intermittent, correct? Before deciding if it is a hardware failure, try resetting all settings.

  1. Go to: Settings
  2. Tap: General
  3. Tap: Transfer Or Reset iPhone
  4. Tap: Reset
  5. Tap: Reset All Settings
  6. Enter: your passcode (if prompted)
  7. Tap: Reset All Settings

Single-Out Bluetooth:

Bluetooth works on its own frequency. So, only Bluetooth devices would give you issues. So, if you have Bluetooth enabled while performing this, then interferences may occur. Bluetooth might go within a 20 or 30 feet radius at max. So, disable Bluetooth on any device in a 30 foot radius. Or, just disable Bluetooth on the iPhone, if you have no need for it while on the phone.

Get this iPhone Serviced:

Indeed, this seems to be a hardware issue, given the troubleshooting we have tried here. So, see if Apple can assist your over-the-phone. Also, ask about setting up a Genius Bar Appointment at your local Apple Store to fix this.

Apple Contact Info:

  • Contact Us - Choose Locations
  • Proceed from there, as necessary
  • Why the Wait: Phone calls are taking a bit to go through at the moment, due to lots of calls. With the Coronavirus Pandemic, many are at home at the moment, with much time on their hands to contact Apple. So, just stay on the line, and you will get through :)

Or...

Contact an AASP:

  1. Go Here: Find Locations - Apple Authorized Reseller
  2. Click: Service & Support
  3. Enter: your location information
  4. See: if there is an AASP nearby
  5. Contact: an AASP that shows up, and find out more about the services that they offer to fix the battery

I've been to the local Apple service center, they ran a hardware diagnostic - all normal, no issues detected. Apps tested in the shop, all working normally.

We also did a full recovery re-install of iOS 15.4, and a reset of the phone.

Back at home, the microphone worked - but now has stopped working again on Wifi calls (WhatsApp, LINE, Threema, FaceTime, Messenger). On the same WiFi network, and using the same apps on an Android device, I have no issues.

I will have to try a full factory restore, and endure the hassle it entails. If that doesn't work, the iPhone probably goes into the trash.

Same problem here after updating to iOS 15.4. Also I cannot place or receive any calls, they all drop. I have a second phone that I didn’t upgrade and it works fine.

i read a lot of forums and many people are experiencing the problem. Hopefully Apple will notice that the upgrade created a compatibility issue.

i think we need to wait for a new update of the iOS that fixes that.

Thank you for the followup. Report back how the factory restore works.

A. Single-Out this Router:

What happens when you try it on a different Wi-Fi LAN (Local Area Network)? If you have no issues, then it may be an issue with your router. So, start with restarting your router.

B. Single-Out the LAN:

See what happens when you try this elsewhere. Ask a neighbor if you may try their network. Have no neighbors? Then try this at school or work (if permitted).

C. Contact your ISP:

Ask you ISP (Internet Service Provider) if they have had any reports on Wi-Fi calls. It may be a bug they have yet to fix.

Thank you for your input, TheLittles.

I have now done the various resets, after which the issue is resolved temporarily but then reappears, out of nowhere. Also with bluetooth disabled. I have no issues with Wifi calls for both my phone lines when using a non-Apple product.

To note that now the iPhone's microphone is also intermittently not working for audio clips recording, but continues to work normally for video recording.

Probably a hardware issue after all.

Thanks again for your advice, TheLittles.

Yes it is an intermittent issue, and resetting the phone usually temporarily resolves the matter until it happens again. .....

My gut feel is that it may be something linked to lingering Bluetooth interference. I seem to remember that, on two occasions, the network call microphone issue occurred AFTER I had used my phone with a bluetooth audio device, even though the bluetooth device was well out of range and no longer connected.

Could this point to an issue i.e. solution.....?

Have restored iPhone to factory status (although remain "stuck" with iOS 15.4 - if indeed it is an iOS issue)

Backup restored.

Same issue again.

Last option is probably to restore 15.4 again and then re-install all applications manually to avoid a previous data / iOS conflict from a backup.

Yes, nothing better to do in my life than trying to get a phone I purchased from Apple to work the way Apple advertises it.
