My husband has been paying for Apple Music, I got the family plan and shared it with him, will he continue to be billed for it or will it automatically cancel his subscription?

Not automatic. He should cancel the individual one.

"If someone in the family group already has an individual or student subscription to Apple Music, renewal of that subscription is automatically canceled when they join the family group."
If he cancels his subscription before joining the family subscription, he might lose his music library.
