Shading of event on calendar

I've tried over and over to shade "appointments". I get a colored dot but not the appointment. I have no idea what to do to keep the appointment/even shaded.

Any thoughts?

Color-code specific events in macOS calendar I've been using Google Calendar for years and recently discovered that the macOS calendar works better for me -- except for use of colors. Is it possible to color-code specific events in iCal -- not just entire calendars or entire categories of events? If so, please tell me how. If not, is there an extension or workaround? Also, would color changes show up in Calendar on my iPhone? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Only all day events are shaded.
