Safari jumps to the top of the previous page

I have seen a couple of other discussions on here about this, but nothing seems to fix it.

When I am using Safari (iPhone iOS 15.4) any time I hit the back button, it brings me to the top of the previous page instead of where I left off. This is particularly annoying when using google search. I don’t remember this always being the case, and I feel that this is only been recent (within the last few months).

I have tried the private/non private tabs, deleting Safari data/history, force closing Safari, and nothing.

Is there a setting I am missing?

It’s not a search engine problem. I open, say, the New York Times, with Safari. I scroll down to the story I want to see. I open the story and read it. When I hit the back button – once – Safari brings you back to the top of the NYT homepage. This is clearly a bug.

It’s an issue between Google and Apple who are no longer fast friends, they have each pulled back the benefits they once brought to the table. Apple brought the reader view to Google, and Google brought the jumpless search. Together they made their respective browsers the best of the best. Sadly they have had a falling out and taken their toys and gone home. Patiently waiting for them to make peace.

I’m afraid this has been tried long ago. It does not fix the problem. Apple have done nothing to fix this. It’s the worst bug I’ve ever seen over years that has not been addressed.

these workarounds don’t work. Even opening in new tab and going back doesn’t work. Safari is horrible on iOS because of this. Many of us experience this. Every iOS update doesn’t address it.

FIX FOUND

using iPhone 13ProMax (16.1.2) Safari

open a search and chose a listing. When ready to return to the search page, swipe right (very slowly) till you see the search page, continue slow right swipe till the original page I presented at the place you left off. Important: slow as a slug swipe right and the phone screen must be absolutely clean. If the screen is dirty or the swipe is fast it won’t work. You’re welcome

I have had this problem for a while now I’m not sure where it started because I just got a new iPhone in October of last year and it started after I got this phone but not right away. Anyway, I have searched and searched and searched often on and most everything I had seen I had tried or I need it wouldn’t work or people had said it didn’t work after they saw it posted.

Then I saw this post in searching again to try my best to alleviate this very annoying problem and your suggestion work like a charm. So far I’ve only tested a couple times but so far it seems to work like a charm so thank you for taking the time to post it here!

Same here (iOS 16.2) and this has been very frustrating me for a long time. I do not get that iOS dev team does not experience this and if they do why they won’t fix it.

Whenever I click a link somehwhere on a page and I hit the back button or swipe back, 99% of the times I don’t go back to where I left off but instead I go back to the very top of the page, having to scroll down to the search result or link I clicked.

First I thought it had something to do with content or cooky blockers but after removing those the situation did not improve.

I think it has something to do with cookies and storing data where a user is on a web page and maybe privacy even.

Very frustrating to say the least. I can’t imagine the iOS Safari development team does not know about this but they sure aren’t doing anything about it.

Anyway, I’m going to file a bug report and I suggest all of you do the same. The sooner this will get fixed. Well, I hoped for a fix in many iterations of iOS but no luck so far so don’t get your hopes up.

This is a ridiculous claim. I use a content blocker so I don't even see that many ads.

Which — by the way — is not causing the scroll to top bug. When I disable all content blockers, clear cookies and website data, it still happens. It happens in other browsers too, like FireFox. This is clearly a WebKit problem.

I spoke to Dutch and English Apple Support Technicians on the phone. They acknowledge that this is a bug and they told me that Apple is investigating as to why this is happening. Maybe this will get fixed in upcoming iOS 16.4 release as they are implementing changes to WebKit.

I'm astounded by why it takes them so *&^%$#$%^& long though. I hardly shop or read news anymore on iOS because this is such a **** bug.

Can confirm the same issue here. It’s been happening likely since a late iOS 15 update however, I just left with it. Finally became fed up with it today and searched, found this post.

it’s crazy to me that this has been going on for as long as it has with no explanation or fix from Apple. I’d hoped it was as easy as coming here and someone saying ‘oh change this setting.’, not a need for a workaround. But here we are.
