If my Homepod is streaming music and I open a photo slideshow on my iphone, my Homepod stops. Why is this happening and how do I correct it?

When a Slideshow is playing tap Options in the bottom right corner and change the music options. The next slideshow you start should use the same options.

If your slideshow makes use of Apple Music then any concurrent streams are going to stop, unless you have a family plan for Apple Music which allows up to six streams.

Thanks @turingtest2. Makes perfect sense. Is there any way of stopping the native suggested photo slideshow playing music?
