Trust “iphone” on mac does not work

hello, i am trying in vain to connect an iphone x to a macbook pro early 2015. if i connect the phone using its original power cable, tap the “trust” button in the trust “iphone” screen of the finder and then input the password on the phone no connection is realized: the little circle below the “trust” button on the mac’s finder starts to rotate and rotate and rotate… 15 minutes later it is still rotating… can anyone please assist?
